Gabberdisco? Gabberdisco? If there are two words which don't mix, it's Gabber and Disco. And truth be told I do not understand this new kind of music. It's weird, it's unusual, and beyond belief. But in a strange way as interesting as Greazy Puzzy Fuckerz' weird take on Hardcore too. But Gabber and Disco? Who would have thought htat?
I was notified about this mix by the man himself, DJ Skyline. We've seen a mix in the past, and I think it was a Scott Brown dedication mix. Which is sadly gone forever. But no matter what, we still have this mix to look forward to. A Gabber disco mix. Which still baffles me. I'm not sure if the title really resembles the music, but who am I to judge?
DJ Skyline mentioned that there's a Bandcamp page, so I looked it up. According to their page, it is ' an over-the-top approach to Hard Dance music: high energy high speed Hardtek that combines elements and quotes from Dance music and pop culture of the 20th century with the sound and the technical possibilities of today'. Now that's a mouth full, and still doesn't explain really why it's called Gabberdisco, but they also had this to say: 'it's about positive attitude, lots of content, made to put a smile on your face'. Well, that's no word of a lie.
Let me see what kind of records DJ Skyline used for this rather unusual mix.
01. Chryzis - Mary Jane In Wonderland
02. The Speed Freak - Synthethether
03. The Speed Freak - Cosmic Gloryhole
04. Stormtrooper - Follow The Trooper
05. Hekteka - Journey Through The 90's
06. Chryzis - Do It
07. The Speed Freak - Abschiss
08. Dat Tuig - Magistrate Manoeuvres
09. Chryzis - Workin'
10. Search And Destroy - Jerk Your Body
I thought I did recognise a specific sound! Of course it was The Speed Freak! And also Stormtrooper. The others do not ring a bell. But a distinctive sound was heard throughout this mix, and it sounds familiar. So it's not really new new to me, but the fact that they use elements and quotes from the 20th century, well, that's not new either. But the ones they use, those are quirky.
I still don't know what to think of it. It's quirky, and yes, it's unique. It's not really a hundred percent unique to me, but it's just... I don't know. It does pack a lot of energy, and it does make you bounce and move your head. There's no denying in the fact that they put the fun in Hardcore music, or Hard Dance in general. But would this kind of music appropriate for me to rave to for a whole night?
Sadly, the answer is no. This is nice for an hour. And that's exactly how long DJ Skyline's mix is. But not longer than that! You just don't know what to expect! It's a rollercoaster ride, but instead of the standard seats in a rollercoaster with the bars coming down on your shoulders, this one doesn't have any bars, and you are holding on for dear life, travelling to the first looping. Scary, yeah.
Can't really pick a favourite record. They still baffle me, each and every one.
This could turn your boring Sunday morning into something you have not experienced before. Give it a try. It's all about fun. And we all like a bit of fun.
