The Hardstyle Flashback 4.0 (2023)

The weekend is nearly coming to an end, but why not end on a high note? And the high note being, a flashback mix to the glorious years of Hardstyle. Yesterday's mix was all about Hardcore from the 90s, and now we are focussing on the Hardstyle sound from 2011 to 2013. Monkey Kong has done it yet again, and this fourth instalment has got the biggest tunes from these 3 years. As this is the fourth mix, there's plenty of mixes for you to listen to, to catch up on the tracks from the years gone by.

There are huge gaps between the mixes. The first and second one were uploaded 3 years ago, the third one 1 year ago, and now we are experiencing the fourth mix. The first one I discovered a few years ago, it grabbed me, and I wish Monkey Kong would do these on a more regular basis. But at least we should not complain as of right now, as we've got a brand spanking new mix.

If I'm brutally honest, my knowledge of Hardstyle from those three years are kind of vague. I think I was at a stage in my life during which I diverted my attention to just one style, to a plethora of other styles, and I started to shift my attention constantly. I think that was also the basis for my reviewing endeavour. I love music in general, so I lost a bit of interest in Hardstyle. Still find it awesome, don't get me wrong, but I think around 2015 I stopped loving it as much as I did during the Millennium years.

That doesn't mean I dislike the music. On the contrary. I do still love the 'early' Hardstyle sound. Do I prefer it over the present day Hardstyle? Sorry to inform you all, but I do. It is just so much more 'me'. This is what I grew up with and adored. But does the selection by Monkey Kong move me as much as it should? Is it capable of grabbing my attention, and make me feel in love again?

Wow. What a tracklist! Monkey Kong's selection is truly a good selection, and they are all by big names. The artists are all big names! Some still are very active in the scene, and to think about it from this perspective: these songs are at least 10 years old! Where has the time gone to?

I do love it though. The tracks are solid as a rock, and all very uplifting and euphoric sounding Hardstyle anthems.

They are true Summer anthems. You would hear them throughout the year, but the best time of the year would be the Summer: festivals everywhere, drinks in one hand, and the other high up in the sky, reaching for the Sun, and your feet stomping the ground like never before. And for them being euphoric, the Summer time just suits it the best.

I love the happiness these tracks have. They are capsuled in this happy sound I really appreciate. Cheerful and happy. Not all the records are my jam, but they would get me going through an evening of partying.

A great selection by Monkey Kong. And also kudos for having 'TMU' in this mix. A truly great record! And also 'Feel So Good (Again)'. Epic song1
