Chronicles of Trance 001 (2024)

The end of the year is near. Let's end the year on a high, shall we? A few days ago, I was notified about a new mix by johnnydavison on Soundcloud. Not one to ignore a message, I quickly had a look, and I was amazed. Not just by the mix itself, but by the length of it! 6 hours long. And according to the DJ, 164 tracks in this mix. I don't mind long mixes, but 6 hours is quite long. The 'norm' for our website is max 2 hours. I try to review these whenever I've got a few hours spare. Not 6 hours spare. So I had to come up with an ingenious plan.

Well, it's simple: split the mix into multiple facets. I had a few long car journeys ahead, so that sorted out at least 2 hours. And I had to do some DIY as well, so another hour. And I got Lego as a present for Christmas, and as we all know, those things aren't easy to build. Yep, another hour gone while this was playing in the background. And today the last bit, the final stretch. The end is near, and I'm glad to have gone through this extensive mix. Because it is quite long....

This is not the first time he's presented me with a long ass mix. He had done those massive Classic Trance 50 mixes. But to do 6 hours and cram in as many tracks as he could find, that's impressive. But is it worth it, to end the year on such a high? Unless you don't like Trance, you might just sit down, press play, and let the next 6 hours be dominated by this mix. Like there's fuck all on TV right now. Sit down and relax. And if you want to bust a move, why not?

I apologise for the messy format, this isn't the usual way I put tracklists down on my website. But it is what it is. This is what's in the mix, just deal with it.

This is split into 25 acts, and some might have a quirky little name to it. If you want to read the tracklist in a nicer format, click here (it will take you to the PDF version of this tracklist).

But the main focus lies within the mix. It already had some positive feedback from the listeners, and if you want to keep this mix, you can even download it and take it with you, wherever you want to go. But as you can see, this has got a lot of epic Trance anthems in it. Can't fault the DJ for the tracklist nor the tracks selected.

It does start off a tad slow. Not my favourite kind of Trance. It needs to have a quick pace, and that's NOT what we are getting at the beginning. The mix slowly builds up towards a wicked end hour, but to get there, that's a long journey. It is still enjoyable, but it's a tad too slow. Maybe after the 2 hour mark, that's when it becomes really interesting for me.

I like the concept, and I hope he continues with mixes like this one, but hopefully a shorter version. It would make my life easier. But how can we say ''no'' to a nice Trance mix?

It does have a great flow, but not 100%. Certain sections do flow well together, but others just sound a bit off. That doesn't happen very often though.

Credit where credit is due. 6 hours behind the decks and composing such a mix is a tremendous thing to do. You should definitely check out the tracks and the mix, and immerse yourself into johnnydavison's latest mix.

Best record? Are you kidding me? How can I choose from that many records? Can't do it, sorry!
