Gizmo & The Darkraver @ Rezerection - The Nightmare (1995)

If I have to give the Scottish credit, it's for them loving the Dutch Gabber sound. Since the early years of Gabber they have been organising parties all over Scotland, and getting the Dutch artists to play at their events. One of the most legendary events (which I've not been to sadly) is Rezerection. And correct me if I'm wrong, but that event is still going strong, right? Or is it just my imagination?

Back in 1995 they had a Rotterdam edition. And the line up seriously gives me goosebumps! Proper oldskool, and a line up not seen in a long time. And the tickets were OK when it comes to the actual price: £22.50 for a ticket to see the following artists: Paul Elstak, Tango & Cash, Darrien Kelly, The Darkraver, Gizmo, DJ Rob, Petrov, Mark Maclauchlan, Neophyte, Terror Traxx, Too Fast For Mellow, Two Terrorists, E-Wax, Bodylotion, Brothers In Law, Rotterdam Records, Euromasters, King Dale, Bald Terror, Hard Attack, Evil Maniax, and more.

That's one seriously insane line-up. Fucking insane. You Scots, you know how to create an awesome line-up. I am impressed. Don't know if the actual event was awesome, but I'm guessing that with such a line-up, this event must have been awesome.

Magpie303, the awesome Soundcloud Hardcore collection creator, has uploaded Gizmo & The Darkraver's set on Soundcloud. And it's exactly what I was expecting. Gabber, Hardcore, and a tad of Happy Hardcore. And judging the length of the set, it must have been taken from the cassette. The quality is low, but that's to be expected from a tape around 25 years old.

The tracklist is awesome. If someone could fill us in with the missing track, that would be appreciated!

  1. The Wasteland - Is It Acceptable

  2. DJ Gizmo & Delerium - Do You Wanna Dance

  3. Isaac - Pump Up The Party

  4. Bertocucci Feranzano - XTC Love (Original Mix)

  5. Frantic Explosion - Power To The People

  6. Vibes & Wishdokta - No More Tears

  7. ID - ID

  8. Stingray & Sonicdriver - As Cold As Ice (El Bruto Mix)

  9. Active Force - Head Like A Pac Man

  10. Shrillness - Atomic Sexmachine

  11. DJ Tails & Noizer - Drum And Basz

  12. DJ Gizmo & The Darkraver - We Got The Juice (Original Mix)

Oldskool vibes galore! You would expect to hear this kind of music when you think of the year 1995. The Scottish crowd must have been absolutely absorbing this awesome Rotterdam sound. I've never been to an event where they played Rotterdam sounding Hardcore, but it's always been my favourite kind of Hardcore. And the tracklist does look awesome. A bit of everything. Hardcore, Gabber and even Happy Hardcore.

Sadly, the set itself, is a complete nightmare. Now I fully understand the fact that they had to use basic equipment, two turntables and a mixer, but this set is filled to the max with errors. Don't know if it's because of the recording quality, or maybe the tape quality, but to me it sounds more like a DJ error. Maybe the Darkraver had a few too many Bacardi and Cokes down his neck?

I wish the set was a bit better. I've heard better sets from 1995. This really isn't one of the best. Sadly I would consider it to be one of the worst ones of 1995. At certain times it does sound good, and the transition goes well, but most of the time it just sounds like a cluster fuck. A big one.

Thanks Magpie303 for this set. The mixing isn't great, but the tracks are. Especially 'Head Like A Pac Man'. Haven't heard that one in years!
