Yesterday I was playing on my phone, and found a few records on it. Defqon.1 anthems. To me, since 2009, they've been on top of things. One of the best anthems in the Hard Dance scene. So the most logical thing to do after this is to go to our friend Soundcloud and look for mixes containing these anthems. And I have found one! Well, technically speaking I already found one a few months ago, but the mixing was absolutely appaling, so that would have not been a good one, but this new one, mixed by JDN, looked more promising.
I have reviewed the 'Helemaal Doorgetoerd' mix series before, and I think it was Jason Payne's mix who got me into this new series. This new mix was uploaded 4 months ago, prior to Defqon.1 2018 of course. So I'm a tad late. Or maybe a bit too early, for 2019's Defqon.1. But I think this won't do you any harm, to listen to these wonderful and marvellous anthems. I really have the feeling that they are the best of the best, if you compare them to other event anthems. And they are diverse too.
JDN has mixed the anthems starting from 2003 until 2018 together, in cronological order. So we start with DHHD's anthem of 2003, and finish with Project One's 2018 anthem. Let me show you the tracklist. It's a beauty.
01. DHHD - 30 Minutes (Defqon.1 Anthem 2003)
02. Tuneboy - Demolition (Defqon.1 Anthem 2004)
03. The Prophet - Emergency Call (Defqon.1 Anthem 2005)
04. Showtek - The Colour Of The Harder Styles (Defqon.1 Anthem 2006)
05. Brennan Heart vs JDX - Get Wasted (Defqon.1 Anthem 2007)
06. Luna & Deepack - Biological Insanity (Defqon.1 Anthem 2008)
07. Headhunterz - Scrap Attack (Defqon.1 Anthem 2009)
08. Wildstylez - No Time To Waste (Defqon.1 Anthem 2010)
09. Noisecontrollers - Unite (Defqon.1 Anthem 2011)
10. Headhunterz & Wildstylez & Noisecontroller - World Of Madness (Defqon.1 Anthem 2012)
11. Frontliner - Weekend Warriors (Defqon.1 Anthem 2013)
12. Coone - Survival Of The Fittest (Defqon.1 Anthem 2014)
13. Ran-D feat Skits Vicious - No Guts, No Glory (Defqon.1 Anthem 2015)
14. Bass Modulators - Dragonblood (Defqon.1 Anthem 2016)
15. Frequencerz - Victory Forever (Defqon.1 Anthem 2017)
16. Project One - Maximum Force (Defqon.1 Anthem 2018)
As you are all aware, during the early days of the 2000s it was Hard House that dominated everything. The daddy of Hardstyle. So the first few anthems were dominated by this sound, but slowely over the years they changed into full on Hardstyle anthems. And I think the transition has worked beautifully. And to be fair, I do love the true Hardstyle anthems more. From 2009 onwards the records have spoken to me a lot more.
It was mr Heady who changed the game. But before we start talking about the quality, let's talk about the man behind the voice. Whoever he is, his voice always brings me cheer and happiness. Quite the low voice, but oh so suitable! Credits for the man who provided us with the majestic 'Defqon.1' voice.
After listening to JDN's mix it became apparant that it was going to be difficult for me to hand pick a favourite. There are simply too many! I really love 'Scrap Attack' (the record that got me into Headhunterz's sound), but what about 'World Of Madness','Survival Of The Fittest', 'Maximum Force'... but after hearing this mix and using my brain I have decided that the best record has to be 'Victory Forever'. But that's a personal decision.
If the Australian anthems would be included, I would have picked one of them. But they weren't, so let's not talk about them.
A really good mix by JDN. Really enjoyed it. And if you are into Hardstyle and love Defqon.1, you should check out this mix. Quality anthems, for sure!
