The other day I was searching for some good music on Amazon Music, but couldn't find anything. I really wanted to hear some Gabber/Hardcore music, but it was difficult to find some. I thought 'why not just name an artist from the 90s, see if Amazon recognises the name?'. And the name was 3 Steps Ahead. How funny is that? This whole streaming stuff is new to me, but it's cool to find the music you were hoping for. But be warned: if you ask Alexa for Hardcore, Hardcore Techno, or Gabber, you won't get what you want to hear.
Obviously when I heard the legendary anthem 'Gangster (Feel So Good)', I had to go onto Soundcloud to find a mix with this record in it. And sadly there weren't that many. Don't know why, seeing as it's truly a wicked anthem. From my youth this track is. It has so many memories, but not just that one: a lot of Peter-Paul Pigmans records have remained in my top 100 Hardcore anthems-list. I might not have agreed with his livesets (too much screaming going on), but judging his records on a producer level, it is top notch. And fucking weird from time to time: just check his Junkie 4 Life album. Truly weird.
3 Steps Ahead was and still is a legend to many oldskool Hardcore fans. Sadly he passed away too young, but his legacy lives on. And Tha Dodge Jr's mix contains a few of 3 Steps Ahead's biggest hits. Not just his records, but also a few others, from the same era. So it all blends in nicely.
What to expect from this mix? Well, you can expect to hear these records:
Diss Reaction - Jiieehaaaa
50% Of The Dreamteam - Freddy's Revenge (..Rock You All)
DJ Delirium & Guitar Rob - The Way That We Rocked It (Live In NYC)
M-Jay & Dan-Vee - Burning Up
DJ Delirium & Guitar Rob - Speakermurder
Twin Terror - No Colours Anymore
3 Steps Ahead - Hakkuh (Original Mix)
3 Steps Ahead - Gangster (Feel So Good)
3 Steps Ahead - Gabbers Unite (Long Mix)
3 Steps Ahead - In The Name Of Love
50% Of The Dreamteam - The Thundertheme (The Prophet Remix)
DJ Psycangle - Smile Fuck Up
3 Steps Ahead - Money In My Pocket
DJ Chosen Few - Name Of The DJ (Original Mix)
3 Steps Ahead - Drop It (The Ender Mix)
DJ Weirdo & Dr. Phil Omanski - Young Birds (3 Steps Ahead Mix)
It is a nice looking tracklist. Not only 3 Steps Ahead tracks, but a few others too. Some extremely cheesy, but remember: those were the 90s. And they were glorious years. So many great songs, so many great DJs and producers. And of course, we still had 3 Steps Ahead. RIP.
The DJ behind this mix made a very diverse mix. Not a fan of a few records, like 'Freddy's Revenge', 'No Colours Anymore', but the others do put a smile on my face. Especially 'Gangster'. You knew it was going to be my favourite song, right? You read this review from the first to the last letter, and knew I love this record. Is it 3 Steps Ahead's best record? Do you agree or disagree?
A solid mix, with a few exceptions here and there. The sound quality differs from time to time, and the mixing can be a tad sloppy, but all in all a nice mix. It gave me the right boost during work yesterday and today, so thanks Tha Dodge JR for this mix.
If you are new to 3 Steps Ahead, worth listening to his albums. Such a diverse and unique character in the Hardcore scene, truly missed.
