Thumpa - Celebrating 25 Years Of Mokum Records Pt 2 (2019)

Mokum Records. If you've not heard of this label before, are you even a Hardcore enthusiast? Are you a Gabber? Created back in 1993, this label has had many releases by big Hardcore names such as Chosen Few, Flamman & Abraxas, Tellurian, DJ Dano, Scott Brown, Technohead, Party Animals, Painbringer, Peckerhead, Riot Natio, and more, many more. And Thumpa decided to release a mix commemorating their achievements in the last 25 years. His first mix (which I couldn't find, sadly) had probably a lot of other records from this majestic label, and this second instalment continues with this trend.

So, why did he do it? He made it, because he's a fan of this label. According to his Soundcloud page, it's one of his favourite labels. To me Mokum has given us many memorable tunes, and has been part of my youth during the 90s. It is quite funny to realise that there were a lot of labels which released awesome tunes. Back in the 90s I never investigated much time into the labels and their releases: I just bought whatever was in my weekly budget.

Thumpa has got many Hardcore mixes on his Soundcloud, so why did I pick this one? Well, Soundcloud's algorithm decided that I should see this mix, and no other mix. This had to be the mix that Soundcloud wanted me to listen to, so why not?

So which tunes are used for this mix? The tracklist is here. But what makes me wonder is which tracks Thumpa has used for the first mix? Couldn't find it on Soundcloud anymore...

Thumpa's selection is great. A lot of forgotten tracks. A lot of these I've not seen or heard for quite a while. Some are not that great, to be fair lol, and I understand why they have been forgotten about, but the majority should deserve a bigger stage.

A lot of these are all time classic records, and Thumpa's decision to play them, is justified. And obviously one of the biggest records from Mokum's discography has got to be Tellurian's 'Guyver'. I can honestly say that this has been one of my all time favourite records, without a shadow of a doubt. Big anthem by Tellurian, still loved by the Hardcore community.

But, the one anthem I would have liked to hear on this mix, would have been Technohead's 'Accelerator #2'. Now that's a big anthem. It might have been used on the first mix, don't know sadly.

A few records aren't my favourite, and sadly Rob Gee was involved in those: 'Sex, Drugs & Gabberhouse' is one of those, and 'Abba Gabba'. I have heard Rob Gee play 'Sex, Drugs...' live at Mysteryland 1998, didn't go down that well. This record hasn't aged well, compared to the others used for this mix.

A very nice dedication mix for one of the pioneering labels of the Hardcore scene. Support both the label and the DJ of this mix, DJ Thumpa! And check out both their websites and Soundcloud channels: so much more music for you to hear!
