Calling The Hardcore. Interesting concept. And no, it's not the Dutch kind of Hardcore. It's the old UK sounding Hardcore. More likely to be Breakbeat focussed, and a lot of piano bits and bobs. Only recently did I review another mix by DJ Jedi, and it was interesting, to say the least. It got me hyped up more for Breakbeat Hardcore, and when I found this set on Soundcloud, you know I had to save it, and come back to it as soon as time permits. Today is the day I've got some spare time, hence why you are reading this, and you are about to listen to a wicked Hardcore set.
You know a set is going to be big, if the first song has got a saxophone and piano bits at the start. It literally set the tone for the rest of the mix. We go back in time, and DJ Jedi is taking us on a journey. No bullshit, no time to waste. He goes straight in, and it's a pleasant journey from the start. You immediately feel young again (unless you were already old in the 90s), and words like 'illegal' , 'warehouse', 'underground', 'rave' , 'Hardcore', etc, appear in your head. Oh, the old days...
I was only a nipper when Hardcore became big, so I'm not up to speed. Well, what I'm trying to say is, I know a lot of songs, but there's still a lot of anthems out there I'm not familiar with. Hence why I like to jump the bandwagon, and listen to every 'oldschool' mix. I just need to know and experience the music from the glorious 90s. And sometimes you do hear something new and exciting, and this was one of those sets that contained a few unknowns to me, and I immediately fell in love with them.
Therefore I had to share it with you all, and it also came with a tracklist, which makes it even better! So, without further ado, here's the list:
Head Factor - Nuff Respect
Timebase - Unity (Ragga Mix)
Scott & Keith - This Is Deranged
Doc Scott - Surgery (Remix)
The Turk - The Lover
The System - Get The Music
PP Orange - My Feelings (Rhythm Mix)
Stu J - Bodyrock
Freezone - Feel Free
Humanizer - So Many Ways (Bongo Mix)
A-Sides - News Flash
DJ Jedi - Can't Stop The Feeling
Terrorize - Only Your Love (Tuff Beat Mix)
Cosmo & Dibs - Bodywork
Mine & The Rhythm - Break 3
Tike & Krimson - Reggae Reaction
Audio Assault - Party Time
Bubbles - We Can Ride The Boogie
Force Mass Motion - Annihilating
DJ Jedi - Jedi On E's (Side B)
Krispy Krouton - Can You Feel The Sunshine
A fantastic mix. DJ Jedi has done it again. And it also has a few of his own productions in here. But if you are in it for the oldskool vibes, you are in for a treat. There's one track in here so damn hard and rough, it's going to blow your speakers (and your mind, if you aren't careful).
When the mix hits the 7 minute mark, it becomes dark and edgy, and it's at that specific moment 'This Is Deranged' is played. My sweet Baby Jesus, what a monster of a track!!! Yes, this is what I feel is the pinnacle of Hardcore. It's got everything you need in one track. And when it goes in 'reverse', that's when my mind blew into a billion pieces. Fucking hell, what a monster anthem. Give this track more exposure, this is certainly a ridiculously insane track that needs to be played everywhere, at any given time. Fucking hell... RAVE ANTHEM ALERT!
I've been listening to this set over and over, and it's certainly an epic one. Not feeling the MJ song, 'We Can Ride The Boogie', but maybe after a few drinks I might just like it. But don't ruin a classic...
All jokes aside, a wicked set. An hour of DJ Jedi and the finest records he found. If you were at 'Calling The Hardcore' and you witnessed his set, you must have been a great night out. I wasn't there, but just listening to this set puts a smile on my face. Big big mix.
