Gimme The Funk Gimme the Funk (DJ Hype 1993-1998) (2020)

It's Sunday morning, time to chill. Another busy week is ahead, and we need to 'wind' down a bit. The perfect music to wind down with, has got to be Drum & Bass. A bit of it won't hurt you. Yes, you might feel a bit Hyped (see what I did there?), but you will still feel chilled to the bone. And I have found the perfect mix for you Drum & Bass fanatics out there, made by the regular to this site, DJ Pearsall. He's made yet another epic mix, and today is the perfect day to get your head around it.

DJ Hype. Is there anyone who's a Drum & Bass fanatic who doesn't know him, or his name? DJ Hype has been around for many years, and his music has been a huge influence to many upcoming producers, and ravers. DJ Hype is a legend, with a lot of big anthems under his belt, and he has contributed a lot to the Drum & Bass scene over the years. As a true DnB lover I have owned a lot of CDs mixed by DJ Hype, and I do love his music, and his style.

DJ Pearsall made this dedication mix, filled with anthems from 1993 until 1998. So the early DJ Hype stuff. You can hear him progress throughout those years, from Hardcore to Jungle to early Liquid Funk. It's a nice mix, and it's all in order. 27 years of DJ Hype. Unbelievable.

The tracklist is a must see! Check it out!

The mix intensifies the 'younger' the records become. Again, remember that these records are in order, so you start back in 1993, and the last 4 records are from 1998. You see DJ Hype slowly progressing into the DnB legend that he is. And it's all been mixed together beautifully by DJ Pearsall, but he always has excellent mixes, if truth be told.

The mix is tight, as usual, and Pearsall has picked some excellent tunes. Obviously this is not the first time I've reviewed a mix made by him, and it won't be the last one either. Lockdown has given us all a lot of opportunities to spend time accordingly, and I'm guessing DJ Pearsall has got a few other mixes coming? I hope so, seriously hope so.

The mix is tight, the records are wicked, got nothing negative to mention. But the big question remains; do I like DJ Hype's 'early early' work, or the 'later' work? Well, I do like the 1993 records in this mix. Not saying that everything after 1993 is shit, absolutely not. But the Hardcore side of Hype was really really good.

Which takes us to the section where I select my favourite records of this mix. And it's without a doubt the best one: 'The Chopper'. Big anthem.

Check this mix out, and let DnB rule your Sunday. Why not?
