GR Tape 3 - Gillbax (2022)

If you were to say to me ''it's Monday'', I would believe you. But it's not, it's Thursday, and it doesn't feel like a Thursday. It feels slightly weird, and I cannot describe it. But a weird day requires some 'weird' music, and have I got just the right mix for you all? A mix I stumbled across yesterday late afternoon, and it was probably because someone reposted it or shared it somewhere, but normally it wouldn't appear on my timeline, but it did. A mix made by someone called Gillbax, for a Soundcloud channel called Gabber Resistance.

Now you might be wondering, what's this mix all about? Well, if the name of the channel didn't get you thinking of the musical style called Gabber, there must be something wrong with you. But don't worry, doctor TCD here to help. Yes, this mix contains a few classics from the 90s, some forgotten Gabber classics by the likes of Predator, Scott Brown, Nordcore GmbH, and more.

There seems to be a lot of love for Gabber and Gabber Resistance's channel, this mix already got a few reposts and likes, and it's only been a few hours online. Not even a day, and people are loving it. But truth be told, I listened to this mix yesterday on my way home from work, and I had the music on max volume. Why? Well, because the mix is good, but the tracks selected are monstrously gorgeous! Hardcore in general might get a lot of attention, but the 90s Gabber sound is (to me) sadly too underrated. It deserves more credit, and with this mix it at least gets some recognition.

But which tunes am I referring to? Well, these:

  1. Nordcore GmbH - Nordcore Attack

  2. Genaside - Nuclear

  3. DJ Isaac & Pagan - 2 Definitions

  4. Scott Brown - Brain-Damaged

  5. Michelangelo - Pump The Bass

  6. J.D.A. - Voel Je Die Bass

  7. Predator - Filled With Power

  8. Warlock - Straight On And On

  9. Lord Of Hardcore - Rip It Up (Annihilator Remix)

  10. DJ Skorp & Chronotrigger - The Answer

  11. Bruyaa & Ozonic - Ruthless (Mix)

  12. Scarface - Hear It Twice

  13. Spellbound & Mickey - Damn Skippy (Just Scream Mix)

  14. Virtua Insanity - Banzai (Original Mix)

  15. Da Mindcrusher - Bellyfood

  16. Party Animals - E.H.B.O.

  17. Delta 9 - Son Of A Bitch

  18. DJ Hyste - Sector Boom

  19. Starbanger - Defenders

  20. DJ Weirdo & Guitar Rob - Be A Gangster

  21. DJ Skinhead - Take It Outside

Now this is a proper tracklist. How often do you find these tracks in other mixes? Not that often, right? And that's what I meant by saying this is underrated. But it's oh so good. This just reminds me of one of the best years of Hardcore/Gabber, which was 1996. I miss this year a lot. Can't believe it's now 26 years ago!

This mix is a good one. Gillbax has made a very interesting mix, with a shit ton of epic underrated classics. Truly a wicked mix, one you will certainly enjoy as much as I am enjoying it right now. There might be a small snagging thing bothering you, which is the recording quality. It sounds at one stage it goes from 320kbps to something lower than 100kbps, and then goes back up again. The quality goes up and down. You can still hear the tracks properly, but you might notice it too.

It might give you some flashbacks to when we used to listen to music on tapes, and the sound quality going up and down. As cool as it was, I don't miss it that much. Give me music at the highest sound quality!

But besides the sound quality, everything else is great. Good selection of records, and nicely mixed together.

The best track in this mix for a car journey has to be DJ J.D.A.'s 'Voel Je Die Bass'. My God, my rear windscreen nearly blew into a billion pieces. It handled it like a boss, but it was still extremely pressurising. But what a great track.

A good mix to start your Thursday with, wouldn't you agree?
