Back in 2002 ID&T took a risk, which paid off: organising two separate events, one focussed on the ‘lighter’ side of Dance music, and the other to the ‘darker’ side of Dance music, and they called it Sensation White and Sensation Black. The actual event started back in 2000, and has led to multiple versions of it, all over the world, from Europe to Australia, from South America to Asia. But back in 2002 they changed the world completely, and I was there: at Sensation White. Of course I had to make a decision, to go to Black or White, and seeing as my friends back then went to White, I couldn’t go on my own to Black (well, I’ve done such a thing at Mysteryland 1998 Outdoor, but that’s a different kind of story).
To this day it’s still the most played CD ever. To me. The amount of scratches make it unbearable to listen to, so I went on the internet today and found both White and Black as a video on Youtube. And I know the productions behind the events have changed, and now there are a lot of pennies thrown at the actual event, but back in 2002 walking into the Amsterdam Arena and it looking like a church (including a choir) made it more special. I am still grateful to this day that I bought the ticket when it was already sold out from a dodgy man, because it turned out to be a legitimate ticket. So many were left outside, but I was inside, raving the night away. So many great DJs performed at this unique event, and when the megamix happened, we were all amazed: what was going to happen was unique to me. No DJ behind the decks, but a well fabricated mix, and everything around it was superb as well: the lights were on spot. And we all danced. Yes we danced. Until we had blisters on our feet.
Let me remind you I wasn’t at Sensation Black, but listening to the mix today still gives me goosebumps. ID&T were (and still are) innovators and they’ve put not only their own events on the map, but also the Netherlands. They might organise events all over the world, but the Netherlands is the country where we created these types of events, and made them bigger, better and bolder. We did it first.
The tracklist of the actual CD? Well, it’s on the CD and you can hear the exact tunes in the two Youtube video’s I’ve attached underneath the review. The screaming ravers still give me goosebumps, 15 years later.

This CD came also with a DVD, with the actual event recordings on it, including interviews etc. But the main focus for me was the CD. Oh, how I’ve played this to the max. I can literally dream the whole CD, I know when the crowds are cheering, I know when the music drops, I know which track comes next.
What I can tell you straight away is the fact that I went to White, but the Black megamix still holds the most memories for me. How to end a section of your event with two seriously beautiful records, ‘The Truth’ by Cosmic Gate and ‘The First Rebirth’ by Jones & Stephenson. Now that’s the best and only way to show the world how its done. No mucking about. This is how I want to hear at parties. A tremendous build up, classic anthem that stood the test of time, and to play probably the most prolific record in the Hardcore scene: The First Rebirth. Fuck me, this is epic. And the cheering crowds, boy, they love it.
This to me is the best live mix CD ever. The crowd cheering and shouting just makes it more special. And especially the recognisable voice of John B. Wells. Everything, and I do mean everything, is in place. If I die, this is what heaven looks like to me. Depending on you being a good or bad person, (if you’ve been good, you go to White, if you’ve been bad, you go Black). I wouldn’t mind going to Black. Fucking epic set. The one who made this megamix is uncredited for, but he/she deserves the utmost respect. This is the best megamix ever. No one, and I mean it, can compete.
Best record from the White mix? The actual Sensation White anthem of 2002. The best record of the Black edition? The last 2. Simples.
Fucking epic CD. I’ve got it stored on my computer, but I wil go on the look for a new copy, unscratched. I need this so badly. And I wish I could go back to 2002. Those were the days.
This is the album you need to listen to before you die. The very best. Or, let me put it this way: the best ever!
