T.K.'s Early Hardcore (Pengo Records Edition) (2021)

I know, I KNOW. Two mixes focussed on Pengo Records in one week. Normally I would not do that, do this, but this week I just had to. I've been sitting here at home, enjoying this 90s buzz I'm currently experiencing, and Happy Hardcore is currently taking over everything. And when I say everything, I do freaking mean it. And this week it's all been about Pengo Records so far. But don't you worry: if you are getting sick of Happy Hardcore, I've got another mix review coming up, but this one being more focussed on Breakbeat Hardcore. If that's your cup of tea, make sure you check out our page in a few days.

But let's talk Pengo again. Sorry for the repeat mention of this label (twice in one week so far, might even talk a third time, if I feel like it). This label was so influential during the 90s, and has released awesome records from the finest Happy Hardcore artists, such as 3 Steps Ahead, Buzz Fuzz a.k.a. Bertocucci Feranzano, 4 Tune Fairytales, Waxweazle, Critical Mass, Micado, and many more. If you were a fan when the Happy Hardcore genre was alive and kicking (between 1994 and 1998), you knew of its existence and you knew how important the label was. It was your source for your daily Happy Hardcore cravings!

You were a lover, or a hater. There were a few songs out there that bashed the label into smithereens, but to me the label was not a failure. On the contrary, I'm still talking about it many years later. And I'm still loving the tunes a lot. I even got the wife slightly excited about Happy Hardcore, and that's saying something.

Today's mix is brought to us by T.K. The whole mix is focussed on Pengo releases, so be prepared for some happiness coming through your speakers (and a bit of cheese too!)

  1. Critical Mass - Believe In The Future (Extended Mix)

  2. DJ Weirdo & DJ Sim - Pump That Stupid Bass (DJ Friendly Mix)

  3. The Beatsquad - Miles Of Smiles (Original Mix)

  4. DJ Waxweazle - Come With Me (Original Mix)

  5. 3 Steps Ahead - Money In My Pocket (Original Mix)

  6. The Prophet - Big Boys Don't Cry (Original Mix)

  7. Critical Mass - Dancing Together (DJ Waxweazle Remix)

  8. Cixx - Ride To The Rhythm (Extended Mix)

  9. DJ Weirdo & DJ Sim - Go Get Busy (Hardcore Edit)

  10. Mindtrust - Ravers Groove (Extended Version)

  11. Bertocucci Feranzano - XTC Love (Original Mix)

  12. Critical Mass - Burning Love (DJ Weirdo & DJ Sim 173,683 Remix)

  13. 4 Tune Fairytales - My Little Fantasy (Scarface's Remix)

  14. 4 Tune Fairytales - Take Me 2 Wonderland (Extended Mix)

The mix is only 44 minutes long, but within those 44 minutes you get the finest songs from Pengo Records' back catalogue. And it's an impressive list of anthems. Sadly the label itself disappeared slightly from the scene when Happy Hardcore was killed off. It's legacy still remains alive and kicking in 2022. Fuck the haters, Pengo has succeeded and is still alive! You can't drown the penguin, no matter what you do!

The tracklist is good. Really good. Some amazing records, but this is me repeating myself what I said in the other review. The only difference between the other review and this one, is the fact that T.K. selected a few other records too, including one that I really really love. 3 Steps Ahead's 'Money In My Pocket'. That song still give me goosebumps, even to this day!

He has made a very nice mix, but sadly it does contain a few mixing errors, and at certain point is just doesn't run as smooth as you want it to be. A good attempt though, don't get me wrong.

Another day, another Pengo mix. I'll hunt the internet for more. I know you want more, right?
