XLR8R Podcast 488: Goldie (2017)

It's Sunday morning, not as hot as last week, the world is damp, and covered in fruit flies. It's dark, grey, and really cool. And I'm loving it. Well, not the flies, I can't stand them. But besides that, the unbearable heat from last week was too much. I'm sitting here, enjoying the cool weather. But it does get dark earlier, doesn't it? To match the world outside of our windows, let's play something nice, relaxing, cool, and dark (from time to time). And if you haven't guessed who made this mix by just looking at the image above or the actual title of this review... it's a Goldie mix. So you know immediately that it's going to be great. No, more epic. Yes, epic is the word I'm looking for.

Goldie is an all-time Drum & Bass legend, and with the label Metalheadz have set the bar way up high for everyone. Quality over quantity. But it has come to fruition. Both the label and the artist have become a house hold name in the scene, linked to quality music, and excellent mixes. An interesting character this Goldie is, and if you've seen the few documentaties out there, or even read his biography (like I have), you know there's more to the man than meets the eye. But we can say one thing: he knows how to deliver. And I'm not talking about him delivering food, like Uber Eats or Deliveroo.

I'm obviously talking about music. This man is gifted. A pioneer. We can think of many words to describe the man, but it's the legacy that he needs to maintain, which started back in the 90s. Not someone to fuck about with. Someone with a huge passion for Drum & Bass. He might not have been the originator of the style, but his influence in the scene has been tremendous, to say the least.

So three years ago he made this mix for XLR8R. With nearly 30k plays, it's a well received mix. A lot of positive comments were written underneath the mix, and only today I discovered this mix. I do every so often just search the internet for anything Goldie related, so when I came across this mix, I just had to share it with those who haven't heard it yet. It's a banger. Trust me.

I don't know why, but this kind of music suits the dreary outside world. But at the same time it lifts me up into another dimension. You either love it or hate it. You are or a massive Drum & Bass fan, or you hate it. And if you hate it, why are you still reading this? Go away, right now!

I agree that this is yet another amazing Goldie mix. Seriously, someone, if you know of a shit Goldie mix, please comment below. But I've never come across a shit mix, made by the pioneer himself! It's like he gives every single mix 2000%. Sometimes artists do upload a mix which might sound boring or filled with errors, but not with Goldie. He always delivers. And with this XLR8R mix he proves to us all why he's an all-time legend.

I've really enjoyed this set, and loved the calmness surrounding it. For those untrained ears who think Drum and Bass is just noise, it is certainly not 'just noise'. Every kick, every beat, every bass drum has a feeling in it. You need to capture it, open up to it. And certainly enjoy it. Close your eyes, and let Goldie take you on a magical journey!

Which record is the best? It's the last of this mix. Why? Because I love the vocals. Whoever the vocalist is, your voice is that of an angel! I adore the one who sings 'I Adore You'. Truly breathtakingly gorgeous vocals.

Another stunning mix. 3 years old, still fresh as if it was made yesterday.
